Kai Atami Ryokan

Description

Kai Atami is a hot spring ryokan that overlooks Sagami Bay. It is housed in a historical mountain inn built in 1849, updated with contemporary comforts. Guests may also stay at the Villa del Sol, an elegant seaside auberge at the foot of the mountain that serves French cuisine.

Located 50 minutes by train from Tokyo, KAI Atami is a hot spring ryokan that overlooks Sagami Bay.

dining

At the main resort, since the ryokan has no dining room you will also take dinner in your room, where you will be left undisturbed to enjoy the chef’s Kaiseki cuisine.

Breakfast served in your room will prolong this moment of bliss – a hearty meal consisting of a bowl of rice, grilled fish, miso soup, vegetables pickles, and – to top it all off – a steamed course of egg or meat, depending on the chef’s inspiration on that day.

A bowl of tea and a selection of fruit usually round off this first meal that will keep you going until late in the afternoon.

Below the hotel, facing the ocean, is the Villa Del Sol. This second, more contemporary building contains a small number of spacious rooms, and a restaurant serving high quality cuisine with a French influence.

Meals are French and prepared with ingredients that change daily. Dinners consist of multi-course kaiseki meals that include visually pleasing dishes made with seasonal ingredients.

wellness

Baths are fed by Hashiriyu, one of the three oldest hot springs in Japan.

The indoor bath is built from cypress logs, a classic Japanese design that infuses the space with a wood aroma.

Meanwhile, the stylish Kengo Kuma-designed outdoor bath offers an ocean view.

Seikai Terrace

After a dip in the baths, guests are invited to cool off in this ocean-view lounge, enjoying the gentle ocean breeze blowing in while sipping on a refreshing Atami-inspired beverage.

plum blossom viewing

The Atami region, around 60 miles south-west of Tokyo, is known for its warm climate, which allows local plum trees to bloom earlier than anywhere else in Japan. Ume are the city’s official flower and many Japanese come to the area for ume matsuri – the plum blossom-viewing festival that usually runs from January to March. The Atami Plum Garden, just a ten-minute drive from the resort, is a popular destination to see and smell the sweet fragrance of ume flowers.

Umeshu bar

Atami is known for its ume plums, which are used to make a sweet liquor called umeshu. Several seasonal umeshu, including one based on the oldest known recipe, are served in the Travel Library.

Atami geisha show

Guests get to watch an Atami geisha performance, and try their hand at a parlor game known as tosenkyo, which involves tossing paper fans at an ornate stand to create elaborate compositions.
