Kai Izumo Ryokan

Description

Kai Izumo is a hot spring ryokan in southern Japan with rooms featuring private outdoor baths fed by the rejuvenating waters of Tamatsukuri Hot Spring. Meals and activities are designed to share with guests the mythical qualities of Izumo, a land inhabited— according to legend—by the gods of love.

Located a 40-minute drive from Izumo Airport.

Go to JR Tamatsukuri Onsen station by JR, then take a taxi to Kai Izumo.

The spacious rooms feature classic Japanese designs. Each room features a private outdoor hot spring bath, lined either with cypress or Shigaraki-yaki ceramic tiles, that allows guests to spend as much as they want in the skin rejuvenating waters of Tamatsukuri Hot Spring.

dining

Meals feature colorful sashimi platters, as well as dishes that incorporate plenty of seasonal ingredients. Guests are also treated to an original Kai Izumo delicacy: basket clams cooked in a cataplana.

Dinners consist of multi-course kaiseki meals that include visually pleasing dishes made with seasonal ingredients.

While morning set meals feature regional cuisine, such as Japanese sea bass—one of seven prized fish found in Izumo’s Lake Shinji—steamed in fragrant washi paper.

wellness

Tamatsukuri Hot Spring has historically been known as the “hot spring of the gods” due to its potent skin rejuvenating effects, first recorded in the 8th century. Guests are invited to soak themselves in this natural skin toner, either in our bath halls or in their rooms.

Japanese Fireflie Watching

The Japanese eagerly await the month of June every year. They crowd along riverbanks, lakes or nearby water zones in hopes of seeing a show only Mother Nature knows how to put on – a poetic moment that draws people of all ages and only plays in the evening when all the conditions are in place.

After a downpour, when the air is still balmy and humid, smalllights appear by the hundreds, sometimes even by the thousands, like tiny lanterns floating in the heavens – fireflies. During your stay at Kai Izumo, take a look around you as night falls for a chance to admire the show.

Finding the fireflies is as easy as identifying humid or wooded areas, ideally clean ones near a river since fireflies are picky. And to be certain not to miss the moment, keep an eye on the weather and check the websites dedicated to this happening called “hotaru matsuri”.

Yuagari Lounge

Guests are invited to sit on massage chairs and cool off with a sherbet or refreshing beverage after a dip in the baths. The lounge also makes a perfect meeting spot.

Izumo Taisha Grand Shrine

In the era of social networks, there is still a legendary place in Japan that may help you find love or richness: the Izumo Taisha Grand Shrine must be your next big experience! It is considered to be the oldest and largest shrine in Japan, having existed since at least before the 7th century.

It is said to have played a major role in the creation of Japanese mythology, and its main divinity, Okuninushi, is said to be the creator of Japan.

Additionally, Okuninushi is known as the God of marriage, positive encounters and good fortune. This is why couples and singles flock to it couples seeking for their union to last, singles praying to meet the right person.
